The Te Anau Winter Illumination is a festival to break up the dark winter with some amazing lights and events. Based on the history of Te Anau where in July of 1958 residents of Te Anau were able to turn on electric lights for the first time. To celebrate this an Illumination Ball was held.
Fast forward to today... the community of Te Anau decorate their houses, shops and streets with lights. There is a family night out on Saturday 9th July where everyone can enjoy the lights and entertainment. Many people have glow sticks and dress up for the festivities.
During the week following the light up there are sometimes some night time events held including a New Moon illumination bike ride, night nature walk, poets night and much more.
